how come trees are being cut in the median on highway 31, while CONCRETE pilars are being planned for 280 please?
the trees on 31 would lower the chances of head on collisions, but the pilars would NOT do that while being a much sturdier objects to be hit?

As crazy as it sounds, the state is cutting the trees to keep from being sued again if someone hits the trees and is injured or dies. They have done this along I59 and I65. Doesn't make any sense at all to me.

they will be sued by the first person that gets hit headon that is the victim.

I don't think ANYONE's head was in the right place when this choice was made. There was a HUGE tree break on I20 that was 30 or 40 feet wide. This was cut down to put a median barrier up. Sounded pretty stupid to me at the time. Looks bad to me now. I miss the trees.

dixiepixie,
Ornamentals on US 31 in Vestavia are a different consideration than the removal of natural growth in medians of controlled access interstate.
If I'm thinking of the right place then weren't drainage structures also added in the median that you refer to?
I'm glad the ornamentals are being removed. I found them to limit visibilty the last time I was on that stretch of 31.
Bilt,
What concrete pillars do you refer too, other than those that would be made necessary by an elevated expressway?

Mac, it's all part of the same plan, the US31 project is tied to the I59/I65 project (for safety reasons). The stand on I20 was for drainage and widening, plus the median wall, but it still wasn't the best move IMO. The drainage would not have been needed if the trees remained, and the widening did not go as far as the trees. So, there is a median wall, where none was really needed, but the whole system of barriers are connected.

My point was to distinguish that US 31 is not denied access right of way in the same manner as I20. -even though I used the wrong term since US 31 is controlled access- I was stressing the need for visibility that I have had first had experience with the ornamentals obscuring.
The area on I20 you refer to must be the first Eden/Pell City exit at that Christian school. My guess would be that the clearing was meant to provide greater visibilty to officers involved in controlling speeders. I've noticed troopers in this area, if we speak of the same area.

I believe you are speaking of the same area. I, too, miss the trees that were there. I bet the troopers do, too, because it gave them a perfect place to hide with their radars. ;D
