Well well WELL!
France elected a center-right politician who favors close ties with America, less governmental spending and tax cuts over a far-left Socialist who favors continuing the anti-American policies of Chirac, higher taxes and more governmental control over the daily lives of France's citizens.
In fact, the Socialist candidates positions were virtually indistinguishable from Hillary's (or Obama's, or Edward's, etc.). Yet the French, who are far more acquainted with socialism than we are (thankfully!) rejected their Hillary.
Coupled with the election of a center-right government friedly to America in Germany, maybe this represents a positive trend in Old Europe.
It's also interesting to note that both the losing candidate in France and Germany sought to play up the winning candidate's friendliness towards the US and the Bush Administration for political gain- AND LOST.
Maybe the American voters will similarly reject the 'Socialists in Democrat Clothing' next year and send a message to the Jihadists.
I don't often say that we have anything to learn from the French....but this is one of those areas.
La belle France...c'est magnifique! Tres bien!

Did you hear Rush yesterday?
The new president's policy of getting people off of welfare and "putting France back to work" was labelled as "brutal"...

We don't like the French yet. We like where the French might be heading with their new leader but we'll give 'em time.....they might raise the white flag on this work thing....

bama-
I think the French newspapers and our very own New York Times are actually competing to see who can be more petulant. My sources claim it's a dead heat at present.
twista-
If I can admit that Bill Clinton did something right, I can make the same admission regarding the French. It's the whole "broken clock is right twice a day" thing.
I still think this could potentially be one of those pivotal moments in history.
France is about as Socialist as any Western country (barring Scandanavia) can be. If 53% of their electorate decides enough is enough and elects someone who is essentially the Ron Paul of French politics (I mean comparably right of the mainstream), that's pretty amazing.
I don't expect to see the French Foreign Legion deployed to Baghdad anytime soon....but I don't expect Sarkozy to actively block US efforts to fight and win the war on terror either.
Besides...Democrats are already doing a good job of that.
