....the sleazy bastard...
celebrates that the British hostages were released after "diplomatic" measures, and reminded the world that he went through 440 days of hostages in Iran (it was 444)...
then he had the nerve to say they "came home safely"...
that's right Jimmy...they came home safely on your LAST DAY in office when a REAL president was about to take over...

.... What a goober! how can a Southern man be so lacking in testicular fortitude? If I'd had Ronnie Ray-gun cross-hairing me for retaliation, I'd cough up the hostages too. Of course, it's hard to imagine how he would have done anything with the shambles of a military that Carter left us.

deo-
That's a good point you brought up.
Reagan projected an almost tangible certitude that the United States was morally right in its vision and efforts and that it would use all the weapons in our arsenal, both diplomatic and military, to achieve our goals.
Who knows how our military would have fared had they gone into Iran to free the hostages? I suspect that we'd've had a situation far closer to that in Vietnam in the early 1980s than what we have in Iraq now.
But Khomeini's perception of American power under Reagan was that we could prevail and that was enough to compel Khomeini to throw in the towel.
Similarly, when Reagan unveiled the plans for SDI, whether we could actually do it wasn't the issue so much as Gorbachev's perception that American could design and implement such a thing and that Reagan was willing to commit the effort and funds to do it. Such a perception compelled Gorbachev to throw in his towel.
Would that we were blessed with such a leader now....

bama-
I hate to be that pessimistic.
Ronald Reagan triumphed despite the media portraying him as "an amiable dunce" possessing "a sheer idiot genius".
Reagan took his cases 'over the head' of a hostile media and a hostile opposition party directly to their bosses- the American people- and earned the support of the masses.
Maybe 25 years is too soon for us to be blessed with another Reagan...but it doesn't stop me from looking and/or hoping.

bama- I hate to be that pessimistic. So do I -- but I happened to believe Bob Woodward of the Washington Post when he predicted before the 2004 election that the media would mean 15 percentage points to Kerry...and he might have been "low"... I think the media will be worth much more than that for any Democrat in the forseeable future... I hope I'm wrong.....
