After more than 5 years of answering *47 calls, I have put together a little list to help make the experience for everyone.
Things to consider when dialing *HP (*47)
When you decide to use this wonderful tool while driving down the road, here are a few things to consider.
1. Is this something that a STATE TROOPER will be able to fix?
A vehicle fire, grass fire, ANY kind of fire should be reported to 911. When was the last time you saw a State Trooper hanging off the back of a fire truck?
2. Is this a MEDICAL emergency?
Again, dial 911. State Troopers ARE NOT EMS personnel.
3. Do you want to whine because traffic is stopped?
resist the urge. Someone may be having a TRUE emergency.
4. When you get insurance with a company, check to see if they require you to have a report when you hit a deer, a dog or any other woodland creature.
A lot of companies DO NOT require reports, and if you get a report it is an AT FAULT accident on your driving record. If your insurance does not require a report, it is in your best interest not to get one.
5. Do NOT be rude to the person who answers the phone. We are in a small room with no windows, and the state does not offer mind reading classes, so we do not have the ability to see what is going on out there.
6. Along the same note, if you curse at me, I will warn you ONCE. After the first warning, you will be hung up on.
7. Bad judgment on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part. If you are lost, stop at a gas station, ask directions and buy a map.
8. I am not information. If you need the area code for Vermont, call 411. I also do not furnish zip codes. Call your post office.
9. I do not know how many miles it is between Birmingham and B.F.Egypt. This is another instance when you should BUY A MAP!
10. Drivers License is open Monday through Friday 8 AM until 5 PM. Don't call me at 2:30 am with a drivers license problem.
And lastly,
11. If you listen to the recording on the answering machine you will know that you have reached the highway patrol for (insert area here) and then you get the options. Don't ask if you have the highway patrol when you get a real person on the phone. Who do you think you called?
