FYI: People who don't live in JeffCo but work there are paying occupational taxes to JeffCo. And you get a bonus if you work in Bham city limits by being allowed to pay more occupational taxes. Taxation without representation, anyone?
Glad my current job is located in Shelby county, even with the hour commute from Blount county; company owners moved it down there from Bham years ago, just so they wouldn't have to pay the extra taxes.

Gladly, I don't have to pay the occupational taxes. Of course, i don't work in Birmingham. I think that it is messed up that commuters have to pay for the 'pleasure' of working in Jeffco or Bham.

The unfortunate thing is that there seem to hardly be ANY jobs north of Bham unless you're a teacher, a bank teller, or a grocery store employee.

I get robbed of the double tax (county and city) twice a month. Here is what I get for my money:
I work in a secure building locked on the second floor. In the winter time, the drunks/crackheads/homeless come into the open vestibule and sleep, until I can get the dispatchers at Birmingham 911 to send a car to run them off (that is IF I don't get the recording that says "You have reached Birmingham 911, do not hang up. Your call is very important to us.") In the summer time they sleep NAKED on the bench of the Driver's License office at the back off the building. A few months ago a hooker was killed at the Pilot across the street because she passed out under a tractor trailer and when the driver moved the truck he ran over her head. West Jefferson Work Release is a few blocks away, and the criminals are just walking away from there all of the time. As I said in an earlier post, a trooper pulled into the parking lot and found a hooker and her john leaned against a patrol car out back at the shop having sex.
The mayor thins the lack of police officers isn't a problem? I have a friend who works for B'Ham PD. There are some nights when he is the ONLY sergeant on duty and there are only FOUR officers covering the north and west prec.

dixiepixie,
If you call 911, doesn't your phone ring? "Self...send help to self...crackhead trying to enter building in order to use restroom facilities!"

dixiepixie, If you call 911, doesn't your phone ring? "Self...send help to self...crackhead trying to enter building in order to use restroom facilities!" I am not 911. I am *47 or *HP. I would dearly LOVE to drive the state and hack down every single one of those "*47 for road side emergencies" signs. I sometimes sit and wonder what all of the tattle tales who call *47 every time someone thumps a smoke out the window did before they had a cell phone. Remind me & I will post my tounge in cheek "Rules for dialing *47" over here some time.

*47...is that non-emergency help?
Please post your rules, I am sure we will get a kick out of it.
Hold on, somebody in my office just dropped a candy bar wrapper on the floor, need to go and call *47....

*47 IS an emergency line. But it is Highway Patrol emergency. It is for reporting accidents, DUI, things of that nature. It is NOT for reporting fires (Vehicle fires included) or My baby daddy here to beat me up, or somebody stole my cd player...You wouldn't believe the stuff I here.

As far as you getting calls when people thump cigarettes out the window, mine go out the sunroof of the car. ;D

The thing that makes me laugh are the people who call and say "I'm behind a drunk. I had to do 90 MPH to catch up, their tag number is 59*555* (whatever), and I am going to follow them until you get a trooper out here."
What people fail to realize is that with all the talk of understaffed departments, DPS is #1. We have 1/3 of the troopers needed to cover Alabama's highways.

Maybe someone can persuade the Legislature to take the money they want to give themselves a pay-raise with and try training some more troopers...

Kat, please stop. Behind tailgating and running red lights that's my next biggest pet peeve on the road. The world is not....repeat...not your personal ashtray.
I am far from being an environmentalist but for the love of God stop being so d**n lazy and use the friggin ashtray in the car.
This is not personal and is my open statement to anyone else that admits to doing this.

So the people that were calling in this morning (i.e. truck drivers) that said that they have to pay city/county tax because their home office is in Birmingham -- I'm pretty sure that this is not the case! If you're not actually working in Birmingham, you don't have to pay those taxes. We have two guys that work for us, but they don't work in Birmingham, and they don't have to pay those taxes. My husband works all over the place and he doesn't pay those taxes unless he actually works in Bham or Jeff. County. They need to straighten it out with their HR guys or get the HR guys to straighten it out with the county/city.
Unless there's just some special rule that applies to truck drivers.

I realized tonight why I HATE the replay shows. I was listening to Friday's show when I heard the man saying he didn't think that state, county or city employees had to pay the occupational tax.
To answer his comment, oh hell yes we do.
