Do you think they didn't offer her enough money in the contract -- with intentions for her to leave? Was she too controversial?

Within the viewership of The View, obviously she wasn't too controversial because the viewership was up something like 17% year to date (though the totals- from 3.2 million viewers since she was hired to 3.6 now isn't all that impressive).
I'm guessing the same sort of folks that made "Countdown" with Keith Olbermann the rousing success (4th place out of four cable networks in its time slot!) were those new faces tuning into "Rosie's View" because the opinions being expressed by O'Donnel and Olbermann are ideolgocally (and idiotically) the same.
My guess is that Disney, the parent company (in a number of different ways) of ABC was beginning to feel the heat to a level that they were not going to tolerate. When you hit these major companies in the wallet along with publicly voicing your displeasure with what they are saying and doing, you'll get your point across eventually. 'Any publicity is good publicity'- unless you're a major corporation.
Remember that Disney's theme parks used to be very open about having a so-called "Gay Day" (or maybe week) at their parks? While they still have them, they aren't quite so vociferous in their advertising of the days/week. Why? Because people who oppose the lifestyle began to express their displeasure- financially- with Disney. No getting the government or the courts involved- just voting with one's wallet.
