Well, Chris...connotations "come from" USAGE...that's why it's called "connotation"...
"Racist" has come to mean "derogatory based on race."
I just heard on the NEWS during your break that "...you people..." has come to be a "loaded expression."
I offer one more connotation..."racism" has also come to mean the profession by which Sharpton and Jackson make a living...
The caller "Mark" from New York a while ago was right on the "mark"...

We can argue semantics, and sadly, you're right about today's usage of the phrase...
However, the question was: "is what he said racist?"
I stil believe this term, althought stupid and not funny, does not fall under "racism" no matter how you define it. The punishment went too far.

Folks can make racial comments and not be racist. Whether or not some phrase or word is "racist" depends on the speaker. It depends on his motives. It depends on how he views people.

Boys!!! Did he say Boys!!?!?!?! bama, Just imagine if Imus had said, "Comparatively speaking, the Rutgers players exhibited a niggardly effort against Tennessee." A higher order of discourse than that in which he engaged in would probably be even more inflammatory given today's ridiculous climate. Morally right or wrong?

a Congressman got in trouble with the word "niggardly" a couple of years ago...
instead of using it as an opportunity to educate the masses, the media made it another "verboten" word...

Racism only entered the picture when the 'Racists.... Sharpton, Jackson, etc. made an issue out of a White Male made a 'loose' remark! They have driven the 'wedge' of hostility between the Whites and Blacks deeper and deeper......that's their AGENDA!
Thay are seeking for the Blacks to Rule and Control!
That's how they perceive how the 'White man' did 150 years ago.....and they want to do that NOW!

The decision to use of the word "niggardly" was a very stupid choice. You have to be aware of the times you live in.

Ok, Chris, I agree with you. You can use a RACIAL (used to describe race) word without it being RACIST. Calling a black person black is RACIAL using the "N" word is RACIST. Calling someone from Mexico a Mexican is RACIAL. Calling said Mexican a "Wetback spic" is RACIST.
If he meant they were skanked out nasty ugly, he should have said that.

You'll find it difficult to enlighten PC conditioned minds. It's a sign of the "times" in which we live. I'll try to be more gay, bama.

A history book needed to make a distinction between people born in America, and naturalized citizens...
People born here could not be called "native Americans" because that phrase was "taken."
So...the redundant term "native-born American" was the choice...

Hello, Thought Police?
If you have to determine what was in the speaker's soul, who but God is qualified to do that?

Racist is someone who thinks their race is better than other races.
Predjudice is when you hate something because of its looks or pre-judging someone by their looks or appearance or first impression.
Everything is racist now instead pf prejudice. There is another word for the word police.
why cant we all just get along.......because their will never be peace amongst the races, because there will never be peace aomongst the HUMAN RACE.....

Hello, Thought Police? If you have to determine what was in the speaker's soul, who but God is qualified to do that? The public's perception of a person is generally based on his words and deeds. People can make a determination of his motives based on such. No examination of the soul is necessary, or even really possible. As you inferred, only God is qualified to do that.
