Controversial thought #1
I have run across this ever since I can recall noticing. At work and in public places. Maybe it's different in the military and somebody can attest to that.
Premise: Black people in America, in general, are people that can run really fast and jump really high and are good in every sport that requires speed....but they walk slow...really slow and in a lot of cases painfully slow.
Is it a cultural thing? I have been in the East coast, as far west as Oklahoma and in the South. It's the same everywhere. This has been my observation since walking through the halls in middle school to walking in the halls at every job I have been at. You go to the mall and you feel like yelling, get the hell out of the way.
Just a thought that pops into my mind every once in awhile and it's usually right after trying to walk somewhere to get something done and I have to slow down to a freakin crawl...are they saving up energy? Does all the slow movement get stored up some how and that explains the explosive speed come game day?
Anyway...some will take these comments wrong and kind of goofy but I am being honest.
Am I the only one that has this perception or am I the only one honest enough to say it?

Hmm... Never thought about it...
tick... tick... tick... Well, having thought about it, I see no real difference in speed between the blacks and whites. It may just be the people I work with, but they are all over the board in walking speed (both races). Maybe when out on a shopping trip or some other public place, one might think that groups of blacks move more slowly, but I'd say any group of whites the same size will be going slowly too. Could be just the communal enjoyment of doing something together as a pair or a group... On the other hand, I also walk rather quickly and speed by them, but I do that with everyone else too...
If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say you may want to think about the perception of time crawling slowly when staring at people's butts, and that could be why you feel this way. So just stop staring at black people's butts! (Whew, that's a lot of typing just to get that one shot in... LOL)

LOL. I knew you would comment.
First off, I am 6'3 and not 4'5 therefore I am not looking at their butts but the back of their heads. You may be right that it is a communal enjoyment kind of thing because the bigger the group, the slower they go. LOL.
I will say that it may be more of a socio-economic thing because any white or Latino people (have not observed any slow walkin asians that I can recall, LOL) that I see that walk just as slow, give me the outward impression of being lower class. The higher percentage of black people I have been around have been of the lower class, so my perception may be biased in that regard. I will say that the black professionals that I work with walk at a normal speed.
That being said, I still hold that black people in general, which may just be in scope of the lower class, do walk very slow and it has to be on purpose. I say on purpose because there are people just as tall as me walking and if I have to freakin pause and stop, when I am walking at a normal speed, then they are doing it on purpose. There is a certain natural speed a person would walk based on their stride and a 6' person shouldn't be walking the same speed as a 5'7 person, unless they purposely slow down. So when you have a group of 6' guys walking in the speed as if they were 5' tall, then it's on purpose. What bothers me about it is the fact that they don't care about the people around them, that would like to get from point A to point B in their lifetime.
That brings me back to it having to be some cultural thing because there is no genetic or physical reason for it. Maybe it's not a black cultural thing per se but a lower class cultural thing...kind of reflective of why they are in a lower socio-economic status.
P.S. Not every discussion on this forum has to be about solving the worlds problems, so this is just one thing of unimportance that has bothered me, in a sort of who killed JFK sort of way, for years.
Anybody else have any observations about people? Is Twista the only one brave enough to talk about stuff like this in an honest manner? Don't start worrying about what people think of you now. LOL.

The stock answer of racist is given in order to squelch discussion. I have stated it is not a genetic thing, it's not like they can't walk fast and run fast when they want to, but I believe it to be a cultural distinction. It may be more of a mope thing as DixiePixie is alluding to but I know it is a correct observation. I can undertand the hosts of the show either not commenting or choosing the safe road of saying the discussion is racist, so no big deal. Edit: I see lawman and dixiepixie are not afraid to comment on the topic.

Why not make a thread about perceiving that the sun comes up each day?

Why not make a thread about perceiving that the sun comes up each day? I think the "Flat Earth" link in the same named thread, covers the perception of the sun rising and setting. After all, if as they say, the sun is 38 miles wide and 3000 ft up, and the earth is flat, there is not rising and setting. Gee, I am starting to confuse myself.

Why not make a thread about perceiving that the sun comes up each day? Don't see how your comment makes any sense to the discussion. I think you are going to have to explain.

Explain?? What is this kindergarten? Apparently you are unable to elaborate on your comment in order for them to make any sense. Usually when somebody is unable to do this, it's because they are afraid that their comments will be proven unjustified or they are commenting on a "feeling" and are unable to put it in words. If it's the later, get back when you can analyze you feelings into thoughts.

Edit: I see lawman and dixiepixie are not afraid to comment on the topic. It's a fault I am trying to over come. When I was younger, my mother would say I never had a thought I didn't share. I think that was her way of saying I talked too much, but I had, and still have a lot of things to say. ;D
