I'm on Bonechewer. What class/race do you play? Have you done any other MMORPGS?
The reason I posted this and ask is because I'm interested in getting to know others in the B'ham area who get into MMORPGs.

I've got a WoW account that I don't play much. I used to love Star Wars: Galaxies until they ruined it by dumbing it down for 8 year olds. Nothing else can take SWG's place.

I played EQ1 for 6 years. Yes I have a life, no I wasn't one of those 24/7ers, I probably only saw about 60% of the content in that time due to keying/level/flag restrictions.
You should give WoW another shot. One thing that sets it apart from other MMORPGs is the solo-ablility of each class. I always hated wanting to have some fun in EQ and not being able to because you couldn't do anything without having a group.

If it's a fantasy RPG, I played it.
First started playing NeverWinter Nights on AOHell and maxxed out like 5 different characters.
Played EQ1 for about two years. Never got a character past 40 because I kept making alts.
Played Dark Age of Camelot for about a year and a half and maxxed like 8 characters out.
Played EQ2 for about two months. What a piece of crap.
Went >back< to EQ1 for a few months.
Then went to WoW. Honestly, I wasn't all that impressed, but then some of that could be because Ive been there and done that so much that it takes alot to impress me.
I think my main objection was the way WoW handled PvP in that it forced players of widely disparate levels and equipment to have to fight each other a situation that guaranteed the lower level character being killed repeatedly and therefore the person behind the 'toon being frustrated. I found nothing at all entertaining about having a level 60 hang around a level 20 zone killing all the enemy players repeatedly and then running if a 60 showed up. Why not give players at least a fighting chance- say level 40-45- before fording them into enemy or contested zones? a 45 might at least be able to get away from a 60; a 20 can't.
DAoC had a system of battlegrounds where you fought against players within 5 levels of your own and also had what they called The Frontier which was an open PvP area (and HUGE). But you could level from 1 to 50 without setting foot in either area if you so desired. Nothing, aside from a handful of quests, demanded that you go into PvP areas (though the xp and item drops were potentially better there). Before Mythic went and ruined the game with a Frontiers-area overhaul, it was the best PvP system I ever played.
I did play on a non-PvP server and levelled a warlock to 59.7 and a bunch of others past 30 before i cancelled the account. I actually got to enjoy the game a bit more that way but not enough to keep playing.
If I want open and forced PvP, I'll play Quake 6 or whatever it's up to now.

Well heres the thing. I don't know what time periods you guys have played WoW but other than that month I didn't play I have played consistently and will continue to play consistently until they shut down the servers. I have yet to see a better put together game. I can't stand the PVP aspect of it, but that's because I'm not exactly good at it, based on the fact I don't have a "killer" instinct. I don't purposely go after people and I'd rather they leave me alone. That is why I play on a normal server. I am currently the News and Research officer of the largest guild on my server. I look up things for people and rattle information off the top of my head like nobody's business. It's a hobby. I like to research and post information. I love this game. I love every bit of it, even the PVP. I don't like the jerks but what can ya do. I like the social interaction (I'm an introvert in real life and an extrovert in game) With the expansion the game got even better, the new worlds are breath taking. They have made it way more interactive and seamless. With the new flying mounts anything is possible. I am a "boomkin" druid and I can't stand to feral. I have written numerous guides myself and I have complied endless lists including the alchemy list. I'm the guild alchemist and you can ask me anything. and I'll help anyone out so long as it's not too big and you're not annoying. It's a wonderful game and I am feircely addicted.

Yeah, thus far I've tried dozens of MMOs. My husband and I were still in EQ1 and might still be if my brother & sis-n-law had not purchased a copy of the game for each of us. We were made to swear we would quit EQ and play WoW with them. So far, I haven't regretted it one bit.
I haven't created a slew of characters yet, but I'm interested in seeing what a normal server is like. Maybe I'll have to drop in on Skywall and check it out. 8)

GG-
I can surely relate to your disdain for the PvP process.
I'm just not sure why the game devs decided to force people who are incapable at that point of their development to have to go into zones where they are almost certain to run tino very high level enemies. Nothing more frustrating than running back to your corpse, reviving and then findng out that the guy who's 40 levels higher than you is also camping your corpse so he can kill you again the second you revive.
It's like asking a junior varsity second string basketball player to play in the NBA.
I was playing with a group of real life friends who were trying to powerlevel me so that I could run with them. Due to my schedule, I had a bit more time to play than they did and so was on at times when none of them were. I made it into my low 20s without having to venture into contested zones but eventually had no choice. Literally within minutes of getting to a good hunting spot, I was jumped by an Alliance 60. Not only did he jump me but he did so in the middle of a pull when my pet was fighting the mob. So he's 35 or so levels higher than me but he still waits until I am basically defenseless?
Well, I made the mistake of telling my friends what I really thought of people who played like that- ones that obviously were cyberbullies, avoiding a real challenge at any cost, probably because the kook kidz gave them wedgies back in school and so this is the way they get even with those who tirtured them....by torturing others of course.
I say it was a mistake because it turned out that my friends did exactly the same thing and enjoyed it. Something about, "well, if I make them miserable enough to quit, then that's one less Alliance scum and a great victory for the Horde!"
Yeah, right...
I deleted my characters on that server the next day and re-rolled on a normal server- can't remember which one (I stopped playing in July).
WoW is the best of what's out there....but that's like saying XXXXX is the most honest politician out there. It's damning with faintest praise.

Check out page 10-C in today's local fish wrapper (Monday 2/5/07).
Also...did anyone else happen to notice that one of the banners at the top of The Attack Machine's Firum section was an ad for a WoW gold farming/powerlevelling service?
Oh delicious irony!

Between that article and that now infamous South Park episode earlier this year, MMORPG-ers have had a rough time in the media.
On a related note....I saw a G4 show wherein a discussion was held on eBay's recent decision to actually enforce a ban on the auctioning of "virtual property"- equipment and gold from WoW, Diablo 2 and other games. eBay has had this policy in place for literally years but I'm guessing that it was only recently that Blizzard demanded they enforce it.
Whaddaya think? Would any of you actually spend real money on virtual equipment or gold? How will the ban affect the game?

Actually my husband and I have spent RL money in that capacity.
I don't really agree very much about gaming companies that ban ebay/gold farming services, dude, who cares, its a GAME. Its gonna happen, at least give full time RPG addicts some means to support themselves. Since its not a tangible substance of any sort no harm/no foul. The ability to farm and buy/sell gold in WoW is vastly different from other video games.
Thus far I've seen no reduction in my enjoyment of the game based on any "virtual economic effect", I just don't buy that argument.
I read an article not too long ago where the IRS wants to tap into "virtual trading/selling" for money.

I signed up for Zogby polls a while back to see what they were like. This week I received an email indicating there was a new poll.
One of the questions on the poll (I can't recall exactly what the question was other than do you play any of these video games or some such) had World of Warcraft as an answer. I just thought it was interesting.
