What are the drivers license rules after taking the initial test at age (usually) 16? After getting license do you just renew till death without any sort of test?
Saw car yesterday driving VERY slowly up ahead and it almost caused an accident. Saw same car a little later doing same thing -- as I passed saw a much older woman who looked scared to be behind the wheel.

In Alabama, I think you just go for your renewal every four years. There might be an eye test after a certain age, but the only time you have to do the road test again is if your license expires and you don't renew it with in the grace period.

I don't know the rules, but I do know that NO serving politician who wants to keep serving, is going to push for age related testing as you age. It's the same thing with 18 year olds. Why do you think that the driver restrictions only go to age 18, if you have the power to vote, and they learn all about voting in high school, and someone passes a law that limits the freedoms of 18 year olds, you can be sure that will be a hot button issue for first time voters. I've heard it said that the elderly are a HUGE voting base, and if you start restricting their freedoms, you can kiss those votes goodbye.

Right. Why do I sometimes forget it's about reelection. Reelection over anything else -- safety included.
We all know some older people should not be driving! Some are curled up around the steering wheel and can't even turn their head from side to side. After a while, motor skills just aren't the same.
After a certain age, driver's tests should be mandatory in order to have license renewed.

Yup, old people are very skittish. You don't hear a peep out of them until there is some perceived threat to their government endorsed benefits or anything that might highlight their incompetence in things such as driving. They don't want to know that aging has reduced them in some way and will fight anything that would show it.
Politicians don't have a problem restricting drivers licenses on the other end of the stick, which is justified as well, because they don't vote yet.

I am in 1000% agreement with you, but until someone with a backbone is willing to push it through the legislature, it aint gonna happen. I started to say it would take someone being killed, but thats already happened, and nothings changed.

The other day on news when they were removing the gaming machines, a local woman who appeared to be in her 60s said something like (almost exact), "If they take these away, they need to find us something else to do."
I thought, "What a damn shame!! There's plenty to do!! Go find a cause to help or something!"
It's like if she had no gambling joint nearby, she'd have nothing to do.
What a sad state of affairs!!

Sure, I have seen some older drivers that can be unaware of the way they are driving, but I have noticed many of them are Very Careful....just very Slow, oftentimes!
But what provokes me here...about this subject....is PRIORITY!
The most dangerous drivers, without a doubt, NOW...on our roads and highways are CELL PHONE users!
Daily, one after another, weaving....slowing traffic, looking down to read text messages or trying to dial.....THIS IS THE MOST UNBELIEVABLE NIGHTMARE ever......and they should be made illegal to use while driving! --- that's a Fact!

As far as driving test...I think they should be required every time we renew our license. Just because somebody isn't 65 doesn't automatically mean that they are qualified to operate a motor vehicle.

All good points. The legislators should pass a new "Safer Roads" bill and include testing at certain intervals and no driving with cell phones. Probably needs a few other things too. What else? Let's help the old-boys out here (since they are too busy slapping each other on the back to know what's going on.)

I don't think a driving test is needed every time you renew your license. That would be overkill plus increase taxes in some way or another. Most people learn how to drive a car and unless some sort of physical disability occurs or they start to lose their reflexes, which doesn't really start to happen till around your 50s, I don't see it as a problem.
Have an on the road drivers test when you first start, then another one at 60 years old and every time you renew after that.
lawman guest, the reason why old people drive really slow and "careful" like, is that their reaction time has been reduced greatly and they can't see as well from their sides. When you got young folk speeding past them at 80 miles an hour...it's like being in daytona on a moped to them.

Perhaps so, but all those people I have observed with 'reaction' time problems, are over 75 and most around 80 or older!

So in a way, they are more dangerous. That's why I think testing should start at 60...I don't think we should wait until we are wrapped around the steering wheel in a fetal position before we realize that our driving abilities have been significantly impaired.
