...does anyone around here shoot regularly and, if so, where's a decent rifle range? I've got a Mauser rifle screaming to be shot soon, but my family's rural land isn't rural enough to do so.

I shoot almost every weekend, but I don't go to a range. I have access to rural enough land that it's not a problem. I recently bought a .17 HMR. I love it!! Super accurate gun. A buddy (he has one like mine, just a different scope) and I shoot beer caps @ 100 yards give or take. I believe there is a decent shooting range on John Rogers Parkway (the road that runs by the Bham racecourse). I don't know what hours they are open, but I imagine that they'd be open most Saturdays.

Does anybody know where I can purchase a M107 with a Swarovski scope? Urp..4K and up...never mind. LOL
Seriously, those things can do some damage...

Yeah, my dad bought a Marlin .17 HMR with a bull barrel and loves it. He can tap about anything out at about 75-100m or so. I'm looking to get one for my daughter.

I bought a marlin too. Model 917V www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/17HMRMagnum/917V.aspx. Mine didn't have any sights on it, but I got a bushnell scope(3-10 X 32) for about $50 and it works well with the gun. The great thing about this gun is that you can shoot all day and not have to ice your shoulder down at night. And ammo is pretty cheap for it(around $10-12 for a box of 50). Also, the gun itself isn't too steep: I got mine from Academy for about $200. Definitely a great starter gun. Of course, I'm not a beginer but I still love it.

Oh how I would love to get my hands on one of those. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. To hell with beer caps, I'd be shooting hub caps with one of the babies!

you could get a Serbu .50 single shot with some decent optics and play with it to the tune of $2.50-5/round.

It would definitely be fun to try. But my wallet would be hurting by the end of the day. I mean, you can't just shoot once or twice and be happy(or atleast I can't).

sol,
I've heard those names mentioned before, but I am not very familiar with them. What calibers? Are they infantry rifles? I want to say that I've shot an Enfield before, but I'm not 100% on that.

Here's some information: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee-Enfielden.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karabiner_98kMy Mauser is a Yugoslav 24/47. It started its life as either a Czech or Belgian made VZ-24 and was revamped at Zastava Arsenal in 1947. They can be had wholesale (for a decent shooter) at about $80-95 or so. You can get a case of 900 rounds of 7.92X57mm cartridges for less than $100.

I got a new piece this past weekend. www.gunshopfinder.com/Glock/G27.jpgIt's a G27 in .40 S&W. Needless to say, I'm in love with it. I've only put 50 rounds through it so far. Comments?

Rich, are you scared of your 2nd Amendment right? I personally cherish that right. Guns shouldn't be feared, they should be respected. If anything, you should fear irresponsible shooters.

I was just teasing you gun nuts!! Some of you know ALOT about guns.
I have NO PROBLEM with gun ownership and soon will be purchasing a .38 for home protection. Just though the thread was ripe for a ribbing!!

Rich, while the .38 is a nice selection for home defense, I think you'll find the 12 gauge shotgun to be a bit more robust in it's presentation. The 12 gauge, there just something about this gun that says go away like few others.

Another thing about using a .38 for home protection is when you find yourself in a situation where someone has broken into your house in the middle of the night you probably wont be able to aim very well, but a shotgun all you do is point and shoot and you will more than likely hit the intruder.

Mossberg will probably be cheaper than that. Very good gun. Of course I am kinda partial to the 870 myself...but only because I'm an owner.

Yeah, I love the .40 S&W; a more compact round with the stopping power of a .45 ACP. Glocks have a great reputation for reliability as well.

I'm not aware of Mossberg manufacturing a youth model with the compact barrel and stock. I recommend the 870 Youth because it is a shorter shotgun which is better for home defense. Mine's an older Winchester 1300XTR that I've used since childhood. * Speaking of which, what size shot do most of you use for home defense? I keep #6 heavy dove as it'll do the job without killing my next door neighbors across the breezeway.

Yeah, my brain wasn't on when I posted. I totally missed the "Youth Model" in your post.
As far as home defense goes:
- Night stand/concealed gun is the magnificent Glock in .40 S&W. I've been carrying 155 grain but I'm not 100% settled on which ammo I like best yet. - Propped in the corner gun is the 870 with 30 inch barrel. She gets fed 00 Buck. I have no neighbors close enough to be affected by the lead. - Back up gun is a Walther P22(.22 caliber) with CCI stinger 37 grain. I know this one won't stop someone effectively but it beats nothing.
