They say the cost of hotels and gas has gone up and they want more money. Why can't these people go in together and buy some RVs? They could drive those up/down to Montgomery and stay in them. They wouldn't have speeding tickets or hotel bills anymore (Are you listening, Sen. Barron?!). They could park them in Wetumpka across 231 from the 'Casino' and use city buses to get to the capitol. ;D Sometimes I outdo myself... wait until I present my 'WorkFare' plan!

I wish I could get a pay raise! My cost of living keeps going up but what I make doesn't keep up!

The Legislature makes more a year than I do, yet I pay house payment, car payment, childcare payments, taxes, groceries, utilities, etc.... And I'm a single mom who is not getting any kind of child support. I feel no pity for them.

Do they get reimbursed for expenses on top of their salaries? If so, they all need to shut their pie holes and start serving the public. This is not supposed to be their full-time job.

Are they buying their own meals now or are the lobbyists feeding them?
Hey! Here's a good show topic: Research the lobbyists (pick a few of them) records and talk about what they do for our representatives.

No, they need to start with Lord Paul Hubbard, who's been running this state for the last 20 odd years.

I still say start with McGregor. It would be interesting to see how he rewards his dogs/pigs. I hear he wants the dome, too. Maybe he thinks this will help with the gambling issue.
We know how Hubbard rewards. It's easy to see the funding on that one.
I'll bet when Hubbard walks by in the chamber, our legislators start squirting pee. Reckon, they carry extra pants in those brief cases?

That's what Milton wants all the suckers to do, to fill his pockets with 'ill gotten Gold,' and you can be sure alot of those doing the fetching are the John Rogers type's and the Larry Langford's (Fantasy man) who have an agenda to get all the power and $$$$$$$$$, and control they can, so they follow the corrupt 'Miltie's'

Here is a question. What is their hourly rate before and after pay raise?
Now how do you get an accurate accounting of the time? I'm sure they consider eating working since someone else paid for it. But there is the difference being our's and their reality.

It is time to attack these leaches in Montgomery! These scum need to realize that they HAVE NO MONEY! It is THE ALABAMA TAXPAYERS money that funds EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!! What right do THEY have to dictate to US ( the ones that are bearing the burden) what should or should not be done? Damnit the citizens are the ones that are suffering! They do not feel our pain! I am angry and need to go to bed before my blood pressure gets worse!

I think people need to step back and look at this in a different perspective: www.ncsl.org/programs/legismgt/about/05salary.htmIf I am reading this right, Mississippi and New Mexico are the only states below Alabama in it's compensation of their State Legislatures. Compared to other states, perhaps they DO need a raise. Maybe this would go a long way, in practical terms, of reducing corruption that is rampant in the State, which I would think causes the taxpayers a hell of a lot more money.

billt,
My post has nothing to do with you. Please don't start up trouble with me. I have just as much right to discuss this issue from any angle as you do.

another repub admits to support for the concept of a pay RAISE!
he is playing politics, trying to act as if the repubs were hoodwinked, they WERENT, they support a pay raise just like the demos, and together they have figured out a way to do it, cause a fuss over a large amount, then GET a smaller raise with built in yearly raises they dont have to vote on anymore!
that is the real GOAL!

"Legislators have spoken of the need for a pay raise or increasing expense allowances is a legitimate issue. Alabama legislators make about $30,710 in salary and expense allowances, an amount that hasn’t been raised since 1990. Adjusted for inflation, that would be about $48,000 in today’s dollars. The National Conference of State Legislatures notes that current pay for Alabama legislators is about “in the middle of the pack” among states. The cost-of-living has increased 54 percent since 1990. It simply doesn’t make sense for the current circa-1990 pay and allowance rates to be kept in perpetuity." www.alabamapolicy.org/press-2007-01-16.html

"Alabama legislators make about $30,710 in salary and expense allowances, an amount that hasn’t been raised since 1990. quot; Okay, so they were overpaid then, and are trying to get overpaid now. HONESTLY -- Who needs more than $1000 a day to live??!! That's what it comes out to, right? Working for thirty-something days a year and getting $49,000. The answer is NO ONE! You can stay in a very nice hotel, eat at the best restaurants, and make it to and from the state house on less than half that. And for those who can be frugal (hell, I could do it on about $150 a day) can keep the rest of the money for whatever. When you compare what our legislators make to those in other states, you do need to keep in mind that Alabama's cost of living is a lot lower in most cases. Everybody makes more for everything when the cost of living is higher.

jules - Hate to break the news to you, but coming from another state, Alabama doesn't really have a lower cost of living. I came from Delaware and though the property taxes were higher, we had no sales tax. We have found moving to Alabama has not saved us any money due to a supposed "lower cost of living". In Alabama you have to pay a ridiculous amount for the car tags PER YEAR, for example, where in Delaware, we only paid a set amount (20$) a year (regardless of the car) and could pay two years upfront instead of each freakin year. The other thing with the tags is that a NEW car had a five or maybe 7 years tag. In Alabama NOBODY actually looks at the road worthyness of any vehicles and you don't check the emissions. In Delaware, when you got your tag they ACTUALLY had the car inspected and emissions checked...so what the hell is Alabama doing with all the car tag money? Roads?...yeah right.
I don't think it would be fair to say that a State Represenative's job is part time. My point being is that maybe if the wage was at a sufficient level for a full time job, then it could possibly curb the corruption.

Car tags? That's a once a year thing. Mortgage, rent, property taxes...that's every month. I need something more than car tags.
IMHO, politicians aren't going to sell their corruptedness for a mere $18,000 a year. In fact it surprises me that they went through the process of cutting sleazy backroom deals and suspending the rules just for $18,000. All it did was shed light on a very shady institution and now everyone who cares will be scrutinizing ALL of their income and expenditures. I guess some just want to get while the gettin's good.

Well I dont buy intot the "higher wages will help stop corruption" bit.
There are people who make hundreds of thousands of dollars and take just as much kickbacks etc as the next guy who makes fifty thousand or less.
Besides most of these people were wealthy to begin with. If you are like Charles Bishop and are already wealthy what difference is this raise gonna make towards your integrity? NONE
