Anyone have any shows that were once on in this market that have gone by the wayside? Two hosts I used to really enjoy were Tim Lennox and Bob Gambacurda.
I would enjoy hearing both again. Lennoz does the news show on PBS. His liberal spin would be a nice break from the steady right wing diet we get now. I'm conservative, but I like to hear differing opinions.
Any other old hosts you'd like to see return to the air?

Boy, I agree on Tim Lennox. When WERC fired him, that was a MAJOR downturn in local talk radio. Lennox was a liberal, but he was consistent in his views on individual freedoms.

On Tim Lennox from a Google search with a "This Day in History" site: "1990 - Tim Lennox, a radio talk show host in Birmingham, Alabama, was suspended indefinitely for barring black listeners from speaking on the show when they phoned in. Lennox said he was upset because a black man was seen breaking into a station employee's car and had stolen her purse. He told his listeners about the theft the previous day, and then prohibited blacks from speaking on the air by cutting them off. Station WERC-AM apologized for Lennox's inexcusable actions."
Yeah, I remember that one. I was working for a rent-to-own store and dealing with many of the very ilk of people who broke into his coworker's car.
Edit: It's funny; the Google search on Tim Lennox led me to an archived article from 1991 in which he comments on the Birmingham News and its firing of another local media fixture: Dennis Washburn. I remember Dennis' rambling articles about local restaurants, lounges, and piano bars referencing his apparently insatiably hungry wife, Bunny. Does anyone know if Dennis is still among the quick?

i doubt any of you heard the call...when mcgregor got the OK to have dog racing, lennox was talking about how great that was for the future of horse racing in b'ham...i told him after the intial REQUIRED period of horse racing that would be the END of horse racing as long as mcgregor holds the license.
tim disagreed strongly, but the proof now exists

I enjoyed Tommy Charles and John Ed Willoughby (TC and John Ed) for many years...
I never was much of a Doug Layton fan, but John Ed redeems him to a great degree...
They were asked to come back "for a couple of days"...that was 7 weeks ago, and they are starting their 8th week tomorrow
Regarding Tim Lennox, I always got the idea that he was a closet conservative trying to act liberal...same way I perceive Alan Colmes...just never seemed very "candid"...

I remember after Lennox got fired, he got a job at another talk station that started up that was slightly more liberal than WERC. Burt and Kurt had a show there as well. I moved out of state for a few years so Imissed that staion's demise.
Maybe if Winches' new show catches on, it will revive WERC and get it going again.

Stabler and Stewart (Bama play by play guys for FF & BB) have the show on 'ERC.....BTW, they have gotten some big markets away from Finebaum, anyway, they are on WERC---not Winches!

After he quit WJOX, Herb cut a deal with WERC. JOX sued, claiming a violation of his non-compete clause. There was astory in the paper last week that said they had settled and he will be joining the afternoon show on WERC soon, but they can't say when for legal reasons.

Finebaum's nervous............but know of Winches, of Stabler and he should be......Stabler could 'kick' him to the curb! Winches is irrelevant!!!

I'm not a big fan of Finebaum. I prefer listening to Dunnaway and Brown for afternoon sports talk. I've never really thought about turningon Stabler. I'll try him and see how he sounds.
Herb isn't my favorite, but he's better than Finebaum. I've never been a fan of his style. I'd rather hear fingernails on a chalkboard than Jim Rome.

I read somewhere that Matt Coutler sued Finebaum for something a few years ago. Do you know what that was about?

Whwn Finebaum left WAPI and wen to WERC, he was paired with Coulter, who immediately quit and went to some other station before landing with WJOX. I wonder if they ever run into each other over there now. I wish Coulter would leave and take his fat client list with him.
Speaking of old shows, I miss the old basbeall show they had on WJOX in the early days. It was on about three times a week. I think Coulter, Ben Cook and someone else hosted.

By "both" do you mean Coulter or are you referring to Winches?
I enjoy Coulter. I used to see him at Norm's many years ago in a previous life and he's a pretty nice guy.

Maybe if Winches' new show catches on, it will revive WERC and get it going again. The "revival" of 'ERC took a huge jump with the departure of Slimebaum... Winches always gave me the impression of the little kid who sits and waves his hand and says. "Look at me. Look at me!".... But the best thing about Winches is that he is not Slimebaum... I have not purposely heard one word of Slimebaum since his totally inappropriate and completely inhumane treatment of Neal Calloway on 12/20/06.... On other forums, I see there is much talk about Slimebaum's lust affair with Saban...that fits the swine...

I think Matt Coulter is the class of Birmingham's sports reporters, but that opinion is at least somewhat biased.
years ago when he hosted a sports show that had trivia for prizes as a feature, I pretty much fed myself at least once every two weeks courtesy of his program. He and I stood in the lobby on the radio studio one day asking each other NBA trivia questions, trying to stump each other. I've also bent a few elbows with him at Norm's and at "The Irish Deli". He's Good People in my book.
Finebaum....well, I can't even make the case that he's "people" much less "good people".
Winches...I really can't understand the man's appeal, save for he's an ex-athlete so I guess that gives him some credibility. He was the auctioneer at a charity sports memorabilia acution I attended some years back and he constantly exaggerated the values of various items to the point you just wanted to slap him.
