just heard citizen frank entertain the most MORONIC caller of the decade.
"wayne" was claiming the kid in carolina wasnt actually lost, that it was a scam by the boy scouts to make them and the rescuers look good.
beam my up scotty, no intelligent lifeforms here!

Makes me wonder what the B.S.A. is teaching todays youth. I'd be ashamed to put my sons in that program with so many scouts getting lost in the woods. I guess things have changed in the past 15 yrs. -Former Eagle Scout

Don't these kids know how to use a compass. How about starting a fire-Warmth&Rescue Beacon. I never went anywhere without my survival knife and magnesium square.

That didn't last long lol and that was not a slam on women its just how things are.

You would think they would all be carrying GPS units now instead of the compass. Every kid has one and they lock in their camps' position, so when they go out by themselves, in an effort to get themselves killed, they can find their way back to camp. With a compass, unless you knew what direction you were coming from, which I doubt any of these lost kids do, you only have a 1 in 4 chance of heading back in the right general direction. That is also if they went in one general direction.

I heard the newsman saying that the lost boys mother said "he probably got lost because he has Attention Deficit Disorder"
Whatever happened to the days when a parent would have said
"Well he was being a typical boy and just wandered a lil too far off anf got lost"
No there has to be a medical reason why a boy that age cant find his ass with both hands obviously lol
I was a Eagle Scout as well. I was shocked at the difference between scout activities and things learned between my group and a group from Bham. We were country boys and could track, trap, navigate with a map and compass etc and those kids had a hard time putting up a two man tent.

I know this is insensitive, but that boy kinda sounds like a weenie. Apparently he wandered off because he was homesick? Huh?? Where was he going? Home?
By the by...how come almost all of the guys I know that were boy scouts have also been potheads? I dated a Life Scout that was a pothead and I'm married to an Eagle Scout that used to be one. My sister's married to an Eagle Scout that used to be one. Hmm...

richbrout - just because some people don't agree with women being sexualized and objectified in society does not equate to us, minus jules, not liking girls when we were younger nor women when we got older. My wife and I have three girls...so maybe that is why I have a problem with this mentality.
Try not to carry over this debate to every other debate on the forum...I don't want to have to keep correcting you all over the place.

Phinehas- Giving GPS units to scouts is like giving calculators to students. One should learn how to read a compass and topography map before venturing into the woods. As to your most recent comments, I too have( for the time being but changing in the near future) 3 boys and a girl and understand where you're coming from.
Alabamamtnman- Wilderness survival was one of my favorite merit badges. Why would I want a tent that leaks more than my quality constructed survival shelter?
Brandon- Well, at least you're trying to put a good spin on what you did with your local girl-scout troop. ;D LOL! Maybe you and Rich could get together and talk about old times.
Jules- Maybe you and and your sister gravitated towards guys interested in "High" Adventure. ;D

family1st-
I was half joking about the GPS but I am thinking in terms that every boyscout must have a topographical map on them at all times of the particular area they are camping at, which isn't likely. GPS units are fairly cheap and small now a days and would be more prudent to purchase versus two video games and doesn't rely on a whole bunch of other factors.
Not every kid is going to be McGuyver out there and have all the needed stuff in order to get back to camp using the old school methods.
I know...I know...that's the whole point of being a boy scout...but if all these lost boyscouts latley had just a gps unit on them that was programmed with their camp site position it would save a lot of heartache.
It's like rowing across the atlantic with a boat that does have a motor...at some point it is best to end the "roughing it" mode and use technology when it matters the most, ie. when your life is on the line or the consequences outweigh the benefit.

Comeon dude, they spend what little dollars they get on camping and uniforms. How would they pay for a GPS for each scout? Phinehas, when are we going drinking?

Heh,
My troop was great too. The first meeting they had was in a Church of Christ building, and some of the guys stole the Sunday school collection... The troop got kicked out, the culprits got booted, and it was never as much fun afterwards...

LMAo I remember yard darts, use to try and play baseball with them also, lol Don't remember anyone dying or anything a little hurt maybe! but it also made us strong and to be strong in life!
and yes bottle rocket fights are the best , a kid hasn't lived to they had one of them flown up their azz lol
I mean good lord we even had real horse shoes to through back then now they are rubber! lol
and we had real leather foot balls not this foam stuff or what ever, and foam baseball bats with little foam balls, we had metal bats game goes bad slap the hell out of the winning team next day we was all best friends again
remember making carts for the biggest hill ya could find with old wood laying around the sisters skates, half bent nails holding the wheels on cause the holes in the skating wheel base was to big for the nail heads lol
lost a lot of skin on my butt over that one lol but I made it so did my friends
I remember getting a 410 shot gun for Christmas one year I think I was around 7 or 8 went hunting that day enjoyed been hunting before with my dads 16 gage and it kicked like a mule at that age,
Not many kids have done that now I bet, I know a dad now that has a 16 year old that has never shot a gun and he wont let him the 16 year old says when he gets 18 he is getting a gun How safe do you think that will be?
kids need scraped knees they need to hit their thumbs a time or 2 with a hammer! they need to take junk and make more junk they can ride on safe or not its learning growing just my thoughts
