Could someone who is more up on current affairs in Birmingham than I am please give me a heads up here. Why is the Birmingham City School system being audited? From what I was told it sounded like it was common knowledge but I jsut don't pay that much attention to that system. A friend of mine works in one of the schools but they were so upset when I called today and rushing to get some stuff organized that I didn't get a change to find out what was up.

B'ham City Schools are being audited because monies have come up missing from several of the schools; Arrington, Hudson, Wenonah HS.... I'm not surprised, given the leadership of the BSCs. I worked for a company that had their IT contract a couple of years ago. Too many chiefs and not enough indians. When anyone from Central Office called, their computers were seen to that day. Let a teacher call; she'd have to wait for days/weeks/months to get a classroom computer fixed.

Yep, they were also short $20 million in required reserves. The state threatened a takeover if they didn't cut costs and quickly make up for the shortfall. Supernintendo Pinhead, or whatever his name is, started immediately whining about the job losses; not word one about the students.

Will try to talk to my friend today. I feel for her because she is just one of the hard working minions at one of the school offices. It has put lots of tension on her to come up with all the documents to be audited and of course she has to wonder if it will lead to job losses. Personally I think all the high end careers in the Bham City school district should be pulled and handed out to caring people that actually want to DO the job and run efficient, quality schools. But we know that doesn't have a chance of happening.

But we know that doesn't have a chance of happening. These jobs are handed out to the relatives, friends, etc. of connected school board employees. I have a friend of a friend who's a long time teacher in the system and she gets absolutely disgusted as the system refuses to tenure any newly hired teachers who are good at their job. Why? Because they tend to question the system and the inherent corruption in the school system.

I am not talking about teacher positions. I am talking about School board positions as the high end careers.
