to think that we are the ONLY life in the universe requires total arrogance and a lot of ignorance.
there is ZERO chance we are alone!

Until life elsewhere can be found, you too are ignorant. Your percentage is based on what science???

ALL people are ignorant just about differing things.
the "science" you asked? the universe is INFINITE meaning it goes on forever, and given an INFINTE number of planets the ODDS of not finding life drop to ZERO!
KNOWING the extreme conditions where life thrives HERE, and the reality that we KNOW similar conditions exist elsewhere.
there is most likely life in the oceans of liquids on a few moons in THIS solar system.

This should be classic!
I feel like Superman kicking back to watch Lex Luthor and the Joker battle it out.
This is going to be fun.

by the way claiming until we find it it doesnt exist, is like saying north america didnt exist until europeans found it, the germs didnt exist until we invented a microscope to see them with.
we are PROOF that life exists in this universe and its size alone dictates similar conditions exists in almost infinite locations.

billt- That would be a hypothesis, not a fact. The fact that WE are here doesn't prove life exists elsewhere.

Lex Luthor is a highly intelligent character. Notice how many times he gets the best of "The Man of Steel". I have aces up my sleeves.

Did anybody notice this at the very end of the article? There is a reason why you must always look behind the headline and what they want conveyed to what they actually have specific proof of.
"I simulated the passage of starlight through the atmosphere of the planet, and was able to reproduce the variation that they saw," Barman told SPACE.com. "And since I know exactly what physics and chemistry went into my simulation, I know precisely what caused those variations, and I can attribute those variations to water" or other molecules."
The, "or other molecules." being outside of the quote. LOL. What facts are they being vague on and confining to virtually the "fine print"?

I've said all along that religion and science can peacefully co-exist.
I've got 'faith' that there is not only life but intelligent life elsewhere. Statistical probability almost demands that assumption.
If anything, I'm a bit surprised that the scientist mentioned in the "other molecules" quote can't be more precise. I'm thinking that the composition of a planet's atmosphere can be determined using a spectroscopic method, even at these vast differences.

Assuming that the universe in their neck of the woods operates on the same Einsteinian principles it does in ours, they may be having the same problem overcoming the difficulties in travelling across the vastness of space that we are here on the good old Earth.

I didn't use the word, "fact"....LOL. You made statements that clearly implied facts. It is impossible for you to be wrong about anything.
"the universe is INFINITE meaning it goes on forever, and given an INFINTE number of planets the ODDS of not finding life drop to ZERO!"
should have been:
I think the universe is INFINITE meaning it goes on forever, and I think, given an INFINTE number of planets the ODDS of not finding life drop to ZERO!
"to think that we are the ONLY life in the universe requires total arrogance and a lot of ignorance."
should have been:
to think that we are the ONLY life in the universe requires total arrogance and a lot of ignorance, in my opinion.
"there is ZERO chance we are alone!"
should have been:
In my opinion, there is ZERO chance we are alone!
"we are PROOF that life exists in this universe and its size alone dictates similar conditions exists in almost infinite locations."
should have been:

The point being is that they blare across the front page that they have proof of water but in the "fine print", it's EITHER water or other molecules. That's not at the end of the article for nothing.

I also like the implication that "finding water" relates to "finding life"...
While life as we know it cannot exist without water, what keeps water from existing without life?
Also...there may be a form of life out there that has nothing to do with hydrogen hydroxide...

we are PROOF that life exists in this universe and its size alone dictates similar conditions exists in almost infinite locations.
billt- This was stated as a fact, not as an assumption. Whether or not you are right or I'm right can't be determined by science. We can agree to disagree.
richbrout- If we're assigning comic character lables to each other, yours would have to be "CLOWNIE" from the Spawn movie because you have nothing important to say on this thread.

you dispute that we exist? you dispute that our very existence is proof the life exists in the universe? you dispute that given an infinite universe that similar conditions exist?
we exist = FACT....life exists in the universe = FACT!

we exist = FACT....life exists in the universe on this planet = FACT!
Life exists elsewhere in the universe= NOT FACT!

Post by billt on Apr 10, 2007 18:45:01 GMT -5
i simply took KNOWN facts, applied them to what we know about the universe and drew a logical conclusion.
as to "NOT FACT".....that remains to be seen, what "proof" do you have for your bold assertion?
your claim CANT be proven, mine CAN....more basic logic.

I can't prove life doesn't exist outside our universe. You can't prove that it does. It's a stalemate. We each have our own beliefs/faith. Leaving for work- Have a good evening billt.

Post by billt on Apr 10, 2007 18:56:25 GMT -5
have a good evening also.....but it isnt a stalemate, mine CAN be proven and most likely will during our lifetimes.
our thinking clearly differs "outside our universe" by definition there is NO SUCH thing.
universe means ALL everything that exists, so IF something exists then it is part of the universe.
as family and I have shown reasonable people can disagree without being hateful or personal, even when others try to start nonsense.

bama-
You make a good point.
Odds are, if and when we do find life, it won't be anything (well, maybe bearing little resembelence is better) like what we're used to.
Even if we find humanoid creatures, that doesn't necessarily- or even probably- mean that they're going to look like human beings. They could like like Dennis Kucinich.
