You want to see some worst case examples of urban decay and people abandoning those areas? www.builtstlouis.net A great undiscovered internet treasure, with photos of the older residential parts of St. Louis and surrounding cities, along with a bunch of pages and stories about abandoned business and industrial buildings. The East St. Louis section is particularly interesting, with pictures of neighborhoods where there may only be one or two houses left on each block, with the rest torn down (or fallen down) and no one interested in rebuilding on the land... There is a ton of content about the decline of the St. Louis City area, and it seems that Birmingham residents could learn something about the way it could go for them, if present trends continue... And the old industrial sites are amazing, as they show so much large scale infrastructure is just abandoned to rot away... (careful though... you might end up spending days looking at all the great old architecture...)

They just don't make em like they used to. I think a lot of Bham's old buildings have been turned into apartments and lofts.
