Hell...this is worse than Y2K... Of course, we spent 10 years and billions of dollars getting computers ready for Y2K... Atomic clocks and cell phone towers handled the time change without a hitch... But...computers and electronic equipment will "do their thing" in 3 weeks...or you can change them manually now, and change them BACK in 3 weeks... We're making real progress with this time thing...remember the last space shuttle flight? NASA had to get them out of orbit before 12/31/06, because the computers had not been programmed to handle the change of year...hmmm At least Lisa Nowack wasn't on that mission, so they had enough diapers... Even the time tag on this forum's web site is still on standard time...I do get up early, but not THAT early... by the way. Blondie...this IS another religious subject...I know folks who say we should not be messing with "God's time"...

I had to laugh when Dale said his computer must have been built after 2 years ago so it had no problems:). Dale if you are getting your updates as you should, there will be no problem with home computers. Mine is 5 or 6 years old and no issues. Microsoft makes sure there are updates to cover stuff like that.
Now computers at work are another issue depending on what time the different servers are hard coded for. May cause time sensitive servers to reboot at the wrong time if they aren't reprogrammed for the change.

Hey I am lucky I can turn the thing on everyday. I heard yesterday that the XP or newer computers had the correct dates in the clocks... or something.

I'm always amazed by people that supposedly work with computers everyday but cannot type to save their lives. But I digress.
Daylight savings has never affected me that i am aware, other than the first day of it I spend my day going "Did I set my clock right? am I on time? is this the right day?"
However I am one of those people who will go "man, it's dark outside... I might as well stay home." However a majority of the population are going to go out regardless of what the sky looks like. Other than those few people who refuse to drive in the dark, and older people, I see no difference. As for the "lights on for shorter amounts" I can kind of get behind that based on the fact that a lot of people go to bed at a certain time so they can get up at a certain time. For instance I try to go to bed at 10 or 11 because I get up at 5:30 am.
That being said, it's dangerous for me to be in downtown Birmingham in the dark. I get to work at 6:30 in the morning. We don't open til 8, but I still get here this early because my husband and I carpool and he has to be in Pelham by 7:00ish. This morning it was so dark that if we had not turned on the porch light over the weekend I wouldn't have been able to put the key in the door effectively. I tripped over the mail in the dark and if it wasn't for how much of a habit it is to turn off the alarm in the morning I probably would have tripped a couple more time. It's just too damn dark in here during the daylight, how do you think it is when it's black outside?
On the subject of gas prices affecting trips.
From the time I was 2 years old to about 3 years ago we went to Miami in the car every single year. Sometimes twice a year depending. We haven't been in the past 3 years because we have not been able to save the money to go, plus we can't afford the gas to get down there. When you talk about a $2k trip then maybe $30 doesn't matter to you, but when you're whole trip has to occur on $200-300... then you have a different scenario. There was one year our entire trip was paid for because of my granny's addiction to scratch cards. $10 here $20 there and we had gas money and maybe a little nibble money.
We can't afford a plane ticket, we can only take a car. On top of THAT most people do not think in dollars and cents and do not do the math. All they see is a $.50 increase. We ball-parked how much money we would need for the gas to get down there and that was it. Most of the time, actually 90% of the time it was not a "vacation" trip it was a court date trip and we HAD to go. (my biological father lives in Miami) we just turned it into a vacation, because hey, we're in a vacation spot so why don't we act like it?
Also, it is a 4 hour trip from my parents front door to the place we like to go in Pensacola. It USED to be viable to save up about $75-100 to take a one day trip to Pensacola and go eat at a little place we used to love to eat at on the beach and just make a day of it. Leave at 6 am for Pensacola, leave for home at 6pm. Now we can't even save up that amount because we have to be able to get to work and as such we're spending more in gas during the year and not saving that money for our trips.
So yes gas prices have directly affected our ability to take a trip. I envy people who can drop "$2,000" on a trip to anywhere.

Hey I am lucky I can turn the thing on everyday. I heard yesterday that the XP or newer computers had the correct dates in the clocks... or something. That was a ploy the salemen used on the computer illiterate:) Not that they are lying but they just are omitting the fact that older computers get updates just like the newest ones will get updates to take care of future issues
