They (and we) did nothing- save exist- to bring it on themselves. That statement is more true than I think you realize. We (and the Jews) certainly did nothing to create the underlying hatred taught in islam toward the kufr (which is both we, the Jews, and others -hell its all of mankind). But when our soldiers were dragged through streets of Mogadishu in 1992. We did nothing to assuage either the jihadists anger or boldness. When Khobar towers fell. Nothing. The Cole. Nothing. First WTC bombing. They tried again, and succeeded. We as a society were willfully ignorant of the threat and still are. While we, who have supported our rightful ally of Israel did nothing to deserve such ruthless attacks, places under attack such as France and Sweden did even less. Doing nothing is emboldening of this enemy and we did do that.

MG-
This is a position I've long maintained.
Still, when you have a (supposedly) Republican contender (pretender?) for President saying that it was our policies that brought about 9/11, one wonders how such a mentality- "absurd" is the least offensive term I could use- came into being.
It's one thing for a wingnut like Alex Jones, Rosie O'Donnell, Charlie Sheen or some of the folks here to make such a claim. Such people are- thankfully- going to have but little, if any, impact on the national discussion. They are marginal personalities and as a result have marginal opinions.
But someone like Ron Paul gives such outlandish and baseless claims a legitimacy they do not deserve by virtue of being a (supposedly) 'respectable' politician. A line is crossed when someone of Paul's stature begins to weigh in on the likelihood of 9/11 being either caused by our actions or in fact carried out by our government.
There is a segment of this country that does recognize the threat posed by the Jihadists. Most such people are to be found in the Republican party; almost none are to be found in the Democrat party (Joe Liebermann is a very lonely guy, ideologically-speaking). That should be reason enough not to vote for any of the foreign policy lightweights running for Prez as a Democrat (save, as deo points out, possibly Biden).
But when you have major news organizations constantly downplaying the threats posed by the Jihadists, pols like John Edwards saying there is no global war on terrorism, and entertainment pundits like Olbermann and Maher saying that the Bush Administration is probably inventing these terrorist plots in order to keep the public scared out of their wits, it's little wonder why many Americans aren't better informed- if they are at all.
You can argue that Bush hasn't waged this war as effectively as he might have. I'll readily grant that. But, unlike his immediate predecessor, Bush did at least recognize that we were IN a war and strike back. Bush knows that it would be catastrophic not just to this country but to the West as a whole to prosecute a war post-9/11 with a pre-9/11 mentality. I think that other countries might- might- be waking up to this fact, as witnessed by the elections of comparatively conservative leaders in Canada, Germany and even France. At least I hope that's the case.
